Tokyo's Shinjuku ward (a densely populated district home to the world's busiest railway station and the Kabukicho nightlife quarter) will prohibit visitors from using private rental accommodations in residential areas and near schools and cultural sites, following more than 1,300 complaints from residents in the year to March. Officials cited recurring problems including improper rubbish disposal, excessive noise, and trespassing, and concluded that penalising individual operators was insufficient to reduce tensions. The move, which could affect nearly 2,000 of Shinjuku's 3,775 short-term rental properties, reflects growing frustration across Japan with the side effects of record tourism, as similar restrictions have already been adopted in cities such as Kyoto and Osaka.
