Liverpool secured their first Premier League victory of the season on Friday, with Swedish striker Alexander Isak scoring twice inside nine minutes to seal a commanding 2-0 win at Ipswich Town's Portman Road ground, giving new manager Andoni Iraola his first win since taking charge this summer.
Isak struck in the sixth and ninth minutes, both goals created by Dutch international Cody Gakpo. The first saw Isak drill a finish from inside the area after being picked out by Gakpo, a shot that Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen could not keep out. The second was even more impressive: Gakpo slipped a delicate outside-of-the-foot through-ball into Isak's path, and the Swede dribbled around defender Jacob Greaves before slotting calmly into the net. Isak also had a third goal disallowed for offside in the first half — a result that would have completed a hat-trick, having scored one at the same ground in a previous visit while playing for Newcastle United.
The result was a welcome relief for Liverpool, who had drawn their opening two games of the season against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest. Iraola, who previously managed Bournemouth before replacing Arne Slot — sacked after one season in charge — was candid about the importance of the result.
