A demonstration against undocumented migrants turned violent in Durban (South Africa's largest port city) on Thursday, leaving at least five people injured and one foreign national arrested. Around 100 protesters from an anti-illegal migration group marched on an encampment of several hundred foreign nationals — many of them Congolese refugees sheltering outside a government office — throwing stones and wielding sticks before police dispersed crowds with stun grenades. The clashes are part of a broader wave of anti-migrant unrest across South Africa in which at least four foreign nationals have been killed and more than 200,000 people have fled the country since fringe groups set a June 30 deadline for undocumented migrants to leave.
