An 18-year-old Swedish teenager, identified only as Chai, has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison by a Swedish district court for attempted murder, rape, and aggravated assault carried out remotely via the internet against victims in Germany and Australia. The court found Chai had been active in sadistic online extortion networks — sometimes referred to collectively as "the Com" or by group names such as "764" — which coerce vulnerable young people into producing sexually explicit material or committing acts of violence. The case is significant because the court affirmed that violent crimes committed remotely over the internet can still result in criminal convictions, a legal precedent prosecutors say will be a crucial tool in pursuing future cases involving cross-border online abuse networks.
