Maritime authorities have raised the threat level off Somalia's coast to "substantial" after a cargo ship was seized on Sunday and redirected into Somali territorial waters, marking at least the fourth suspected piracy incident in the region within a week. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which coordinates maritime security in the area, also reported a separate hijacking near Mareeyo in northern Somalia on 21 April, with the seized vessel — crewed by nationals from Pakistan, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar — anchored near the Somali shore. Piracy in this stretch of the Indian Ocean had nearly vanished for roughly a decade following an international crackdown, but its recent resurgence is raising fresh alarm for global shipping routes passing through the Horn of Africa.
