South Korean conglomerate Hanwha Group announced a series of international agreements on Tuesday, signing memoranda of understanding with American and Canadian partners across naval, aerospace, and energy sectors. At the Sea-Air-Space 2026 defence expo in National Harbor, Maryland, Hanwha Ocean partnered with US naval design firm Leidos Gibbs & Cox — responsible for designing over 70% of US Navy surface vessels since World War II — to jointly develop next-generation ships and shared supply chains, while Hanwha Aerospace agreed with Northrop Grumman to co-develop propulsion for the AReS long-range missile system. Separately, in Edmonton, Hanwha signed a broad economic cooperation deal with the Canadian province of Alberta spanning energy, defence, and shipbuilding, linked in part to the group's bid for Canada's patrol submarine programme (a ~$40.6 billion contract for up to 12 conventional submarines), where it competes against Germany's Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems.
