A South Korean appeals court has sentenced former president Yoon Suk Yeol to seven years in prison for obstruction of justice and related crimes stemming from his short-lived declaration of martial law in December 2024, increasing an earlier five-year sentence handed down in January. The court found Yoon guilty of additional offences, including mobilising his presidential security service to prevent his arrest, forging official documents, and bypassing legal procedures required to impose martial law. The ruling is one of eight cases Yoon faces since his removal from office; he was separately sentenced to life imprisonment in February for his role as the alleged mastermind of an insurrection linked to the martial law episode, and his lawyers say he will appeal the latest verdict to the Supreme Court.
