The collapse of an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata's Taratala district (an industrial area in India's eastern megacity) has killed 16 workers and injured dozens more after its roof gave way at around midnight on 24 June 2026, trapping labourers who were working at the site. Thirty-three workers were rescued by teams from the National Disaster Response Force, the Indian Army, and Kolkata Police, with rescue operations entering their final phase by 27 June; at least two of the dead were minors, and victims included migrant workers from Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Six people have been arrested — including the land lessee, the structural engineer, and a former aide to ex-Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim — as West Bengal's state government suspended all ongoing commercial construction projects in the area and ordered a comprehensive audit of building plans, with compensation of ₹10 lakh (roughly $1,200) awarded to the families of each victim.
