A puffling (baby puffin) has been spotted on the Purbeck coast near Swanage in Dorset, southern England — the first confirmed sighting of a chick at the site in 30 years. The location is the last known regular puffin nesting site on the English mainland, where numbers have fallen from around 80 breeding birds in the 1950s to just a handful of pairs, raising fears the colony was nearing extinction. Conservationists from the National Trust and local volunteers say the sighting is encouraging proof that the remaining birds can still successfully hatch and rear chicks, though work continues to identify why so many eggs and young have been lost in recent years.
