Mexico and Peru have normalised diplomatic relations following a years-long row, after Peru granted safe passage to former prime minister Betssy Chávez, who has now travelled to Mexico. Chávez had been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison over her alleged role in ousted president Pedro Castillo's 2022 attempt to dissolve congress — a move that led to his impeachment and arrest — but was released on bail in September 2025. The restoration of ties follows the inauguration of Peru's new president Keiko Fujimori, though the agreement has drawn criticism from factions within her own political base; Peru also reserves the right to seek Chávez's extradition at a future date.
