Pakistan's Foreign Office on Friday sharply dismissed India's objections to upcoming general elections in Gilgit-Baltistan (a mountainous region in the north of the country, disputed between the two nuclear-armed neighbours), calling New Delhi's remarks a "carefully choreographed attempt to conflate fact with fiction." The elections, scheduled for Sunday 7 June after a four-month delay due to harsh winter conditions, drew a rebuke from India's foreign ministry, which claims the territory — along with Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh — is an integral part of India. Islamabad countered that it is India which is in illegal occupation of internationally recognised disputed territory, reiterating its longstanding demand for a UN-supervised plebiscite to allow Kashmiris to determine their own future.
