Severe monsoon flooding is battering Punjab province in Pakistan and Assam state in northeastern India, killing scores of people and displacing vast numbers of residents. In Pakistan's Punjab, at least seven people have died and 20 others were injured over a 24-hour period, while around 400 square kilometres of territory spanning the Lahore and Gujranwala divisions has been submerged — a senior irrigation official described the scene as resembling "an inland sea." Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned that the Chenab River is already at medium flood level and is expected to rise further, with urban flooding also forecast for major cities including Lahore, Sialkot and Faisalabad. Across the border in Assam (a state in India's far northeast), 66 people have now died in this year's floods, with nearly 6.55 lakh (655,000) people still affected across six districts and over 800 villages submerged; authorities are operating 274 relief camps to shelter nearly 19,000 displaced residents.
