Asha Bhosle, one of the most celebrated and prolific singers in the history of Indian cinema, died on Sunday in Mumbai at the age of 92 following a heart attack and subsequent multi-organ failure. Her body was cremated on Monday evening at Shivaji Park, a large public ground in the Dadar neighbourhood of Mumbai, in a ceremony accorded full state honours. Thousands of fans lined the streets as a flower-adorned vehicle carried her remains from her Lower Parel residence, where her body had lain in a tricolour-draped glass casket, to the crematorium.

Over a career spanning nearly eight decades, Bhosle recorded more than 12,500 songs across multiple Indian languages, lending her voice to generations of leading actresses — from Meena Kumari and Madhubala in the 1950s to Kajol and Urmila Matondkar in the 1990s. Born in 1933 into a family of musicians, she began performing as a child alongside her elder sister, the late Lata Mangeshkar, herself a towering figure in Indian music. While Mangeshkar became synonymous with soulful and poignant melodies, Bhosle carved her own distinct identity through bold cabaret numbers, jazz-inflected compositions and high-energy tracks. Her breakthrough came through collaborations with composer OP Nayyar in the 1950s, and she later partnered closely with RD Burman — the celebrated film composer she eventually married — in an artistic and personal union that lasted until his death in 1994.

Even in her final years, Bhosle remained artistically restless. She contributed to the 2026 album by British virtual band Gorillaz, appearing on a track called The Shadowy Light that explored themes of grief and mortality. Her influence extended well beyond South Asia: she was the inspiration behind Cornershop's 1997 international hit Brimful of Asha, and the band's Tjinder Singh paid tribute on Sunday, saying
