The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a commanding officer, Colonel I.A. Mohammed, and six other soldiers following an attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on a military position in Monguno, Borno State (a northeastern Nigerian state that has been an epicentre of jihadist insurgency for over a decade), late on 12 April. The colonel was killed by an improvised explosive device while travelling to the frontline to assess an ongoing assault on the Charlie 13 military location, according to army spokesperson Sani Uba. The attack marks the second killing of a senior Nigerian officer in less than a week, following the death of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah in a separate ISWAP raid on a military base in Benisheikh on 9 April, raising concerns about the militants' growing capacity to target high-ranking personnel.
