India's Human Rights Forum (HRF) has condemned Meta's decision to restrict the Instagram account of the 'Stop Vizag Data Centers' campaign, a citizen-led initiative opposing large-scale data centre projects in and around Visakhapatnam (a major port city on India's southeastern coast). The HRF says the account, which had amassed 56 lakh (5.6 million) views and nearly 12,000 followers since its launch in July 2026, was restricted on 19 September, with nine individual posts also blocked in preceding weeks, allegedly under India's Information Technology Rules. The forum has demanded that Meta restore the account and publicly disclose the legal basis for the restrictions, arguing that projects raising concerns about land, water, electricity use, and environmental risks must remain open to public scrutiny.
