Romania has appointed Gheorghe Hagi, 61, as its new national football coach, following the death of Mircea Lucescu two weeks ago at the age of 80. Hagi, widely regarded as the greatest Romanian footballer of all time and nicknamed 'the Maradona of the Carpathians', previously held the role briefly in 2001 before stepping down after a failed World Cup qualifying campaign. He is set to begin his second stint in June with friendly matches against Georgia and Wales, as Romania looks to rebuild after also failing to qualify for the upcoming World Cup under Lucescu.
