The National Union of People's Lawyers (NUPL), a Philippine legal advocacy group founded in 2007, received the 2026 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award in Washington, DC on June 5, recognising nearly two decades of work defending victims of unlawful killings, arbitrary detention, and the drug war carried out under former president Rodrigo Duterte. Secretary general Josalee Deinla, who accepted the award on the organisation's behalf, dedicated it to slain members and to those who continue resisting state abuses, including victims now represented before the International Criminal Court, where Duterte is detained after judges confirmed three counts of crimes against humanity against him in April. The award, now in its 43rd year, honours individuals and organisations who pursue human rights nonviolently at great personal risk.
