Brazilian authorities have rescued a woman who was subjected to domestic slavery for 55 years by the same family, having been put to work at the age of seven. She received no pay or holidays throughout her decades of servitude, during which she worked for three successive generations of her employers. The family has been ordered to compensate her, in a case that highlights the persistent issue of labour exploitation in Brazil, where domestic workers — disproportionately Black women — remain among the most vulnerable to such abuse.
