Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will this week begin a wide-ranging diplomatic tour spanning the United Arab Emirates and four European nations — the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. In the UAE, where some 4.5 million Indians reside, Modi is expected to meet Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with energy cooperation a key priority as Middle East conflict continues to disrupt global supply chains; on Sunday, Modi urged India's 1.4 billion citizens to cut petrol and diesel consumption amid the pressure on the country's economy. The European leg of the tour, running from May 15 to 20, will cover defence, semiconductors, water management, and trade — with bilateral trade between India and the Netherlands alone reaching $27.8 billion last year — and will include the third India-Nordic Summit in Norway, Modi's first visit there and the first by any Indian prime minister in 43 years.
