South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, speaking to Korean residents in Mexico City during a state visit, pledged on Thursday that his term will end as scheduled on 2 June 2030 and that he will not use constitutional reform to extend his presidency. The assurance comes amid repeated accusations from the opposition that Lee's ruling Democratic Party may be pursuing constitutional revision as a vehicle to allow him to serve a second term — a move currently barred by a constitutional provision stipulating that any changes to the presidential system cannot benefit the sitting president. Lee, who took office in June last year for a single five-year term, also held summit talks with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and met with Mexican Senate representatives to advance bilateral cooperation in areas including artificial intelligence and the defence industry.
