A gunman opened fire in a high-rise apartment building in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon, killing two people and wounding three police officers before dying himself, authorities said. Police Sergeant Garrett Parten confirmed at an evening press conference that the suspect is also dead, though the circumstances of his death remain unclear. Julius Bailey said he was sitting outside when he heard gunshots and spotted a man he recognized as a resident brandishing a pistol, before hearing a woman scream and fleeing the scene. He said he had tried to avoid the man — who was known among residents for showing off his weapon — since moving into the building in June. Another resident, Chris Miller, said he had reported a man carrying a handgun in the hallway earlier in the week to building management.
The shooting unfolded near the Minneapolis Convention Center in the city's Loring Park neighborhood, a densely populated area in Minnesota's largest city. Police and Mayor Jacob Frey urged the public to stay away from the area as the response unfolded. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said state officials were on the ground assisting local law enforcement, writing on social media that
