Patrick Fischer, head coach of the Swiss national ice hockey team since 2015, has publicly admitted to travelling to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing with a forged COVID certificate while unvaccinated. Fischer said he had been in an "extraordinary emergency situation" as he did not want to be vaccinated but also did not want to abandon his team, adding that he was "deeply sorry" for disappointing people. He was convicted as a private individual for the offence in 2023 and paid a fine; Swiss Ice Hockey Federation president Urs Kessler said the matter is now closed, with attention turning to the Ice Hockey World Championship, which Switzerland hosts from 15 May 2026 — Fischer's final tournament before Jan Cadieux takes over in the autumn.
