A bipartisan group of US senators has introduced the Stop Transnational Repression Act of 2026, which would for the first time make it a specific federal crime for foreign governments to intimidate or suppress dissidents living in the United States. The bill, co-sponsored by Democratic Senator Adam Schiff and Republican Senator John Curtis, would impose up to 10 years in additional prison time and fines of up to $100,000 on those convicted, while expanding the authority of the Justice Department and FBI to investigate such cases. The legislation comes amid heightened congressional scrutiny of India, after US prosecutors charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta with attempting to arrange the assassination of a Sikh-American activist in New York, with a separate Canadian case also alleging Indian government involvement in the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia — allegations India has denied.
