The US Supreme Court has agreed to hear a challenge by St Mary Catholic Parish and the Archdiocese of Denver against the state of Colorado, which excluded their preschools from a publicly funded universal preschool programme over the schools' policies restricting admission of LGBTQ+ families and children. Colorado argues that religious schools may participate in the programme — created by a 2020 ballot measure and allowing parents to choose accredited centres — but must comply with the state's nondiscrimination laws. The case, backed by the Trump administration and set to be heard in the autumn, is the latest in a series of religious rights disputes before the conservative-majority court and could also lead to a narrowing of a landmark 1990 ruling that held religious beliefs do not exempt individuals from generally applicable laws.
