A military detachment in Niger was ambushed on 17 July 2026 near the village of Doungourou on the Bankilaré-Téra road in the Tillabéri region (a western area bordering Mali and Burkina Faso that is a known hub of jihadist insurgency), killing at least 16 soldiers and wounding 23 others, according to the country's Defence Ministry. Fifteen attackers were also reported killed after security forces, supported by air assets, pushed back the assault. However, sources cited by RFI suggest the true toll may be far higher, with as many as 47 soldiers killed — including the detachment commander — and more than 50 wounded, raising fresh concerns about the military junta's ability to contain an insurgency that has this year reached as far as the capital, Niamey.
