Iranian authorities publicly executed two men in Isfahan's (a major city in central Iran) Shahid Alikhani Square on Tuesday, despite urgent appeals from United Nations human rights experts to halt the sentences. Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi and Abolfazl Sepahi Badjiani were among 12 young men condemned to death for their alleged involvement in the killing of Basij militia members during protests that erupted in the same square on 8 January; two others from the same group had already been executed in July, bringing the total to four.
