A partial collapse of a three-storey chawl (a type of low-cost tenement housing common in Mumbai) in the city's Mankhurd neighbourhood killed six people, five of them children, on the night of 5 July 2026. Two to three tenements within the Janata Nagar chawl gave way at around 8:30 p.m. amid heavy monsoon rains, with victims including a 32-year-old woman and four children aged between two and 14. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed condolences and announced financial assistance of ₹500,000 (approximately $6,000) to the families of each of the deceased.
