Three newborn babies were killed early Monday when a ventilator caught fire in the Special Newborn Care Unit of a government maternity hospital in Amravati, a city in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. The blaze broke out at around 3:30 a.m., causing deaths from severe burns and smoke inhalation; staff evacuated dozens of other infants from the ward, and the fire was brought under control within roughly 15 minutes. Maharashtra's Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule expressed grief over the incident, confirmed that several transferred infants remain under treatment — one in a serious condition — and ordered a full inquiry into what caused the medical equipment to ignite.
