UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Edem Wosornu of Ghana as Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at UNHCR (the UN's refugee agency), one of the most senior protection roles in the UN system. Wosornu, who currently directs the Crisis Response Division at OCHA (the UN's humanitarian coordination office) and has over 20 years of experience in emergency response, succeeds Sri Lanka's Ruvendrini Menikdiwela in the role. Her appointment comes as global forced displacement stands at historically high levels, and she will oversee UNHCR's efforts to protect the rights of millions of refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced people worldwide.
