Filipino basketball player Calvin Oftana has been added as the 12th man to the Gilas Pilipinas (the Philippine national basketball team) roster for the Asian Games, replacing Justin Brownlee, who has been unable to play due to injury. Oftana, a forward for TNT in the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association), flew to Nagoya, Japan on September 9, just two days before the Philippines opens its title defence against Bahrain at the Aichi International Arena on September 11. Head coach Tim Cone described Oftana as a "plug and play" addition, noting that the 30-year-old's familiarity with the team's system and his extensive national team experience — including being the only returning member of the squad that won the Philippines' first men's basketball Asian Games gold since 1962 — make him well-suited to integrate quickly.
