Irene Butter, a German-born Holocaust survivor who lived in the United States, has died aged 95, according to German media citing her agent. Born in Berlin, she fled to the Netherlands as a child, lived near Anne Frank, and was later held at Westerbork (a Nazi transit camp in the Netherlands) and Bergen-Belsen, where she saw Anne Frank for the last time. After the 1980s she spoke publicly, especially to children, about her experiences, and received Germany's Federal Cross of Merit in 2024, warning that people must speak out against injustice to prevent history repeating.
