Wang Jibing, a 56-year-old food delivery rider in China, has won the prestigious Lu Xun Literary Prize (named after the father of modern Chinese literature) for his 2024 poetry collection Low Flight, which was inspired by interviews with around 200 fellow delivery workers. Wang, who left school as a teenager due to financial hardship and spent decades in manual labour before turning to poetry, first gained online attention in 2022 when a poem about a frustrating delivery gone wrong went viral. His win reflects a broader cultural moment in China, where blue-collar workers are increasingly celebrated for literary works that shed light on the realities of the country's vast gig economy.
