The director of Indonesia's National Nutrition Agency (BGN), the body overseeing President Prabowo Subianto's flagship free school meals programme, has resigned after just 45 days in the role, saying she needs to travel abroad for heart surgery. Nanik Sudaryati Deyang, who was appointed in June following the arrest of her predecessor on corruption charges, will be replaced by Deputy Agriculture Minister Sudaryono, according to the presidential palace. Her departure comes as the programme faces deepening budget cuts — from an original 335 trillion rupiah (around US$18.7 billion) down to a provisional 229 trillion rupiah — and ongoing concerns over food poisoning cases that affected at least 33,000 children since the initiative launched in January 2025.
