Congress has voted to close a loophole in the 2018 farm bill that allowed a roughly $28 billion market in intoxicating hemp products, such as THC gummies and seltzers, to flourish across the United States; the ban, capping THC at 0.4 milligrams per container, is now set to take effect on Dec. 11 after a short delay in a government-funding bill. Industry groups warn it could cost 225,000 jobs and billions in sales tax revenue, and are lobbying lawmakers to regulate the products instead, for example with age limits of 21 and package caps. Supporters of the ban, including public-health campaigners and the state-regulated legal marijuana industry, argue the unregulated products are unsafe and unfairly undercut licensed sellers.
