United Nations human rights experts have called for the immediate release of British couple Lindsay and Craig Foreman, who are serving 10-year sentences in Tehran's Evin Prison (a high-security facility known for holding political detainees) following espionage charges they deny. UN special rapporteurs Dr Alice Edwards and Mai Sato said the pair, detained in January 2025 while travelling through Iran on a round-the-world motorcycle journey, were prosecuted on "highly questionable grounds" and convicted after proceedings that failed basic fair trial standards. The couple, from East Sussex, are now on hunger strike after phone contact with their family was severed, prompting the experts to warn that "after 30 days without food, this is a medical emergency" and to urge both Iran to quash the convictions and the UK government to exhaust all diplomatic options to secure their return.
