Tunisia's clifftop village of Sidi Bou Said (a picturesque coastal town 20 kilometres north of Tunis, known for its cobbled streets and distinctive blue-and-white architecture) has been inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The site, which grew around a 12th-century Sufi shrine overlooking the Mediterranean and the ruins of ancient Carthage, was recognised for its outstanding universal value as a centre of cultural, spiritual, and artistic heritage. The designation brings Tunisia's total UNESCO-listed sites to ten, though Sidi Bou Said faces pressing conservation challenges, including land-use pressures and cliff instability worsened by record rainfall in January that triggered damaging landslides.
