Dutch sprinter Lorena Wiebes claimed victory on the opening stage of the Tour de France Femmes on Saturday, outpacing the field in a gruelling finish in Lausanne, Switzerland, to take the race leader's yellow jersey. The 27-year-old beat Mauritian rider Kim Le Court into second place, with European champion Demi Vollering finishing third.

The 138-kilometre stage around Lausanne was far from a straightforward day for sprinters. A four-rider breakaway — including Czech rider Nikola Noskova, Spaniard Idoia Eraso, Dutch rider Maud Rijnbeek and Frenchwoman Océane Mahé — built a maximum lead of six minutes before being caught with roughly 6 kilometres to go. The finale featured steep climbing, and several attacks were launched in the closing kilometres, including one from Vollering. Wiebes, however, managed to stay with the accelerations and delivered in the sprint.
