At least 20 children and one adult were killed on Thursday evening when a bus carrying pupils from King David Junior School (based in Ndejje, central Uganda) on a study tour crashed in the Kapchorwa area of eastern Uganda. Preliminary investigations indicate the vehicle suffered a mechanical fault, causing the driver to lose control on Chekwatit Hill — a stretch of road with a history of serious accidents — before the bus struck a large roadside stone and overturned. The crash has renewed concern about school transport safety in Uganda, a country that records thousands of road deaths annually due to speeding, poorly maintained vehicles, and hazardous road conditions.
