Severe monsoon rains have killed at least 51 people and displaced more than a million across Bangladesh, with flash floods and landslides striking large swathes of the country including the capital, Dhaka. More than half the deaths occurred in Cox's Bazar, a coastal district that hosts over one million Rohingya refugees in the world's largest refugee settlement, where floodwaters last week swept through a school killing several students and a teacher. Experts warn that while Bangladesh — a low-lying, river-dense nation — is routinely battered by seasonal monsoon floods, climate change is making such rainfall progressively more intense and frequent.
