Algeria buried 10-year-old Ayoub Hadaf on Sunday after his body was recovered from a dry farm well in Ghassoul, a town in El Bayadh province (a largely rural area in northwestern Algeria), where he had been trapped for four days. The boy had fallen through an earth-covered well shaft just 40 centimetres wide and 80 metres deep after the ground gave way beneath him; rescue teams were forced to use heavy machinery to dig a parallel pit before they could reach him, but he was found dead. His death has prompted public calls for well owners across the country to properly seal or cover their shafts, with neighbours urging communities to take collective responsibility for making such hazards safe.
