Typhoon Saudel battered four southeastern Chinese provinces last week, triggering mass evacuations and widespread flooding across Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, and Guangdong. Nearly 600,000 people were evacuated in Fujian province alone, where the city of Putian recorded over 416mm of rain in a single day and a collapsed river embankment flattened 100 homes, prompting the rescue of more than 1,260 trapped residents. The storm, the seventh typhoon to hit China this year, also claimed at least three lives in a landslide in Jiangxi's Suichuan county, with nine people still missing.
