The RIVM (the Netherlands' national public health and environment institute) will not be able to move into its long-awaited new building at Utrecht Science Park this year, after yet another setback pushed back the relocation. Originally due for completion in 2018, the purpose-built facility only received its handover in April 2025, but the move has now been stalled again because gas generators must first be installed to compensate for severe congestion on the local electricity grid. The delay matters because the RIVM's sensitive laboratory equipment demands a guaranteed power supply, and the institute's operations director warned that a lab shutdown would create serious problems for public health research.
