A shooting in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood of Montreal, Canada, left three people dead on Monday — a police officer, a civilian resident, and the alleged gunman — in an incident that shocked the city and prompted a temporary emergency alert. A second police officer was seriously wounded but is not in a life-threatening condition, while another civilian sustained minor injuries.

Police were called shortly before noon after a witness reported hearing gunshots and seeing a weapon being pointed from a window in the neighbourhood, which is home to kosher restaurants, supermarkets, and a large Jewish community. Officers arrived on the scene and a firefight broke out, during which the suspect was shot and killed. Videos circulating online showed the suspect lying motionless in the street, dressed in a military-style uniform. Montreal police chief Fady Dagher described the shooting as
