Kenya's public transport operators have suspended a nationwide strike for one week to allow fresh negotiations with the government, following two days of violent protests that left at least four people dead and more than 30 injured. The strike had brought movement across the country to a standstill, with major roads in the capital Nairobi blocked by protesters who clashed with police and set tyres alight, stranding thousands of commuters and disrupting schools and businesses. Transport unions had walked out over rising fuel costs, which the government linked to global energy disruptions stemming from the Iran conflict, while opposition figures attributed the price surge to domestic corruption and profiteering.
