Indian authorities are investigating the seizure of fake vials of Abhayrab, a widely used rabies vaccine, after samples bearing batch number KE25012 were recovered from an unlicensed residential premises in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, during a joint raid on 22 April 2026; four people have been arrested. India's Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL, the national drug-testing authority based in Kasauli) found the vials failed mandatory potency tests and differed from genuine samples in 17 respects, including packaging, labelling, and QR codes, while manufacturer Indian Immunologicals Ltd. has confirmed its legitimate batch of 83,370 vials was properly tested and distributed through authorised channels. The case is particularly serious because rabies is virtually 100% fatal once symptoms appear, meaning anyone who unknowingly received the ineffective counterfeit instead of a genuine post-exposure vaccine may have been left without life-saving protection — a concern heightened by India's estimated 5,726 annual rabies deaths and 9.1 million animal bites each year.
