Austrian lawyer Volker Türk has been re-elected as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, with member states voting 144–10 in favour of a second four-year term. If he serves the full term, he will be the first person to complete two consecutive terms in the post since it was established in 1993. The United States and Israel were among the ten countries that voted against him, with Washington condemning the vote as evidence of UN "corruption and incompetence" and Tel Aviv accusing Türk's office of bias — criticism linked to his outspoken condemnation of Israel's military campaign in Gaza and his calls for compliance with international humanitarian law.
