Shops have reopened and public transport partially resumed in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK, the Pakistan-administered portion of the disputed Kashmir region) following weeks of violent clashes between security forces and demonstrators calling for economic relief and governance reform. The unrest had been led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a protest coalition that the regional government declared a proscribed organisation under anti-terrorism laws in early June. Pakistan's Jamaat-i-Islami party says it is mediating between the government and the JAAC, with JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman warning that any continued use of force risks handing India a propaganda advantage over the broader Kashmir dispute.
