Italy's Court of Cassation (the country's highest judicial authority) ruled on 22 May against extraditing former Brazilian federal deputy Carla Zambelli to Brazil, ordering her immediate release from custody in Rome. Zambelli had been detained since July 2025 following her conviction by Brazil's Supreme Court (STF) to ten years in prison for orchestrating a cyberattack that inserted a fraudulent arrest warrant against STF Justice Alexandre de Moraes into a federal judicial database. The ruling, which surprised both the Brazilian government's legal representatives and Zambelli's own defence team, may have been influenced by defence arguments regarding prison conditions and human rights concerns; the court's official reasoning is expected within 15 days.
