Winners of the 2024 Soweto Marathon (one of South Africa's largest road races, held annually in the township of Soweto near Johannesburg) have still not received their prize money eight months after the event, with race organisers now saying only a partial payment is possible. Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA), the provincial body overseeing the sport, confirmed that limited funds from the race are being held by the Gauteng Sports Confederation and that it is working to release them to affected athletes as soon as possible. The CGA has also withheld sanctioning of the 2026 edition of the race until organisers resolve outstanding governance issues, casting doubt on the event's near-term future.
