The United States and Iran have reached a preliminary peace agreement ending a 107-day war, with Pakistan receiving widespread international praise for its central mediation role. Announced by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the deal — signed in Switzerland on 12 June 2026 and formally confirmed by US President Donald Trump — provides for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz (the narrow waterway through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies pass), and a framework for further negotiations, including on Iran's nuclear programme. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called it "a critical step towards the peaceful settlement of the conflict" and singled out Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey for their constructive role, while leaders from the UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, and New Zealand also welcomed the breakthrough and urged its swift implementation.
